What the Researchers Measured
The work appeared in Communications Biology in November 2025, led by a team at the University of California San Diego. Twenty adults were scanned before and after a seven day retreat held in San Diego in April 2022.
The brain findings are specific. Meditation reduced connectivity within the default mode network and the salience network. Whole brain modularity fell while global efficiency rose, meaning information moved more freely across regions that normally stay separate.

It Was Not Seven Days of Meditation
Here is the first problem with the coverage. The retreat was a bundle.
Participants received 33 hours of guided meditation. They also received 25 hours of lectures on self healing and the mind’s capacity to shape reality. Then 5 hours of healing rituals, during which six to eight designated healers performed loving kindness meditation around them.
Those components cannot be separated. Calling this a meditation study describes roughly half the intervention and ignores the parts a psychedelic researcher would flag immediately. Expectation, group setting and ritual are not background noise. They are the machinery of set and setting, and this design cannot tell you which piece did the work.
The Author List Deserves a Look
Now the part almost no coverage mentions. The retreat’s instructor, Joe Dispenza, is a co author on the paper. His company, Metamorphosis LLC, is the organization identified with the retreat.
The commercial retreat operator is a named author on the study finding that his retreat produces psychedelic like brain changes. That does not make the scanners wrong. It is the same caution we applied when Lilly reported an impurity in a competitor’s product, and when Compass Pathways published a paper arguing its own trial support was not psychotherapy.

The Authors Are More Careful Than the Headlines
To their credit, the researchers say the quiet part plainly. Their own limitations section states the uncontrolled observational design cannot establish causality or separate the contributions of meditation, placebo, reconceptualization, expectations, diet, relaxation, or simply being away from ordinary stressors.
That is an unusually candid list. It also describes almost every possible explanation for the results.
They further note the small sample and the partial reliance on experienced meditators, plus timing confounds. Blood draws ranged across an eight hour window, and up to 48 hours passed between the retreat ending and some collections.
The Molecular Findings Are the Genuinely Interesting Part
Set the brain scans aside for a moment. The blood work is harder to explain away.
Beta endorphin and dynorphin both rose significantly. Those are the body’s own opioid systems. The BDNF pathway, associated with neuroplasticity, was upregulated.
Most curious, plasma drawn after the retreat made lab grown neurons extend longer projections than plasma drawn before it. Something measurable changed in participants’ blood chemistry.
One finding deserves a flag rather than a cheer. Inflammatory markers also rose. Coverage describing immune benefits is glossing over the direction of that result.
What This Means If You Are Weighing Treatment
Patients ask a reasonable question. Can I get psychedelic like benefits without the drug?
This study cannot answer it. Twenty people with no comparison group, at a retreat that cost money to attend, reporting brain patterns after an intensive week away from normal life, is a hypothesis rather than a finding.
What it does support is something clinicians already believed. Non drug practices produce real, measurable changes in the brain and body. That is why integration work matters so much to treatment outcomes, and why researchers keep studying whether some compounds and contemplative practice reach similar places.
It is not a reason to skip treatment, and it is not evidence that a retreat substitutes for care.

The Honest Summary
A small uncontrolled study of an intensive week long program found brain and blood changes worth investigating. The program included meditation, persuasion and ritual, and the study cannot tell them apart.
