Dr. Ferguson is a former Navy doctor and ran a Navy mental health and substance abuse clinic. She and the staff at TMS Hope Center are a close-knit group with “the security to think outside the box, to get rid of our boxes and assumptions.” For many who suffer from depression, conventional medications and therapies are ineffective. The outside-the-box thinking of Dr. Ferguson and her staff allow for a more flexible treatment process, combining healing modalities and centering the treatment on the patient, rather than on the condition.

Ketamine has been in use for almost half a century as an anesthetic, and is considered by the World Health Organization to be an essential medication. More recent research has shown that ketamine is also effective in treating resistant forms of depression. Those suffering from such conditions can find hope and recovery with Dr. Ferguson and the TMS clinic.

Important Info

  • You do not need a referral from a psychiatrist, however, you will need to be evaluated by an appropriate provider to make sure you are a candidate for ketamine treatments.
  • Most insurance providers will not cover or provide reimbursement for ketamine treatments at TMS Hope Center of Long Island.

Your Treatment: What to Expect

Though success cannot be guaranteed, studies show that up to 70% of patients report significant positive outcomes after ketamine therapy. Infusion treatments are preceded by a thorough physical and mental health evaluation. This determines whether or not ketamine is an appropriate course of medication.

A series of 6 infusions is the recommended regimen. During these 40-minute infusions, patients may feel slightly nauseous. Some report a floating sensation. These are normal side effects, and cease soon after the infusion ends. Patients typically leave the office within 30 minutes following the infusion.

Who is this treatment for?

Dr. Ferguson’s website notes that ketamine treatments are thought to be suitable for “adolescents, young adults, adults, and senior sdults.” Anyone in those age groups who are suffering from treatment-resistant mental health problems and/or chronic pain can find an alternative medication in ketamine. As an RAAD (Rapid Acting Anti-Depressant), ketamine can significantly reduce negative thoughts and chronic pain in as little as a single dose.
