To determine if you’re a candidate for ketamine infusions, the clinic will ask you to complete patient intake forms—some of which require the signature of your primary care or mental health physician.
What to Expect at Tahoe Ketamine Wellness & Infusion Center
Pre-Appointment
After filling out your patient intake forms, a consultation will be scheduled. There, you and a member of Tahoe Ketamine will review your symptoms and go over the process. In some cases, it’s possible to receive your first infusion on the same day as your initial consultation.
On the day of your first infusion, don’t eat solid foods, soup, or pulpy juices for 6 hours prior to your appointment, and don’t eat any foods or liquids at all within 2 hours.
Infusion Therapy Process
Before your infusion, you’ll be comfortably settled into one of Tahoe Ketamine’s treatment rooms. Staff will apply monitors for your heart rate, rhythm, blood pressure, and oxygen level. Then, they’ll set your IV and begin the infusion. Ketamine infusions for depression typically last about 40 minutes, while ketamine for chronic pain infusions can last up to 4 hours.
You may experience mild and short-lived side effects such as dizziness, non-threatening hallucinations, and nausea. Regarding the latter, the clinic can administer anti-nausea medication if necessary.
Once the infusion is complete, Tahoe Ketamine will monitor your vitals for about 3 minutes before releasing you into the care of a friend or family member. Do not plan on driving or operating machinery for 24-hours post-infusion.
Future Appointments
Research shows that ketamine infusions are most effective when administered serially over an initial two-week period. During that period, 4-6 infusions are recommended.
After this, patients will enter the maintenance phase. Maintenance infusions are performed on an as-needed basis depending on the symptoms of the individual patient. Some patients require weekly or bi-weekly ketamine infusions, while others may only need infusions every couple of months, or even as far as 6 months apart.
