Your Treatment: What to Expect

Per Boston MindCare, IV infusions are the ideal option for many patients.

Getting Started

Once you’ve been properly referred and filled out all necessary forms, you’ll schedule your first appointment. This consists of a mental health evaluation and question-and-answer consultation by Boston MindCare’s staff psychologist. A medical review with a physician will occur either at this evaluation or at the start of your first infusion appointment.

Appointments for infusions take place after the full consultation process is complete.

Ketamine Treatment

On the day of your infusion, avoid consuming solid food, orange juice, pulp-filled juices, or non-clear broths or soups in the six hours preceding your appointment. You may have transparent liquids such as water, clear broth, apple juice, white grape juice (not dark), black coffee (no dairy or creamer), or clear tea (no milk or leaves) up to two hours prior to your appointment.

You’ll receive the infusion in a private and comfortable treatment room. The team at Boston MindCare provides safety monitoring during every infusion and in the recovery period, including vigilant tracking of your heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, symptoms, and emotional state, and prevention or intervention if needed for side effects such as nausea. An anesthesiologist can also remain in the treatment room with you or be immediately available throughout the appointment.

Subsequent Treatment

Boston MindCare encourages patients to plan for a series of four to six infusions over two to three weeks, with subsequent infusions as needed to relieve symptoms. Most patients require “maintenance” infusions every few weeks.
