In 2018, Soul Quest Ayahuasca Church of Mother Earth was investigated after one of their members died after consuming ayahuasca on one of their retreats. According to police reports, a male member of their congregation began to have what appeared to be a seizure. The shaman directed other members to provide him with a “sugar tea” to (ostensibly) help him. It apparently took 35 minutes to make the tea. And another 30 to administer it. In total, they didn’t call for paramedics until three hours after the man’s issues began. But when they finally did call 911 it was too late. He later died at the hospital.
According to reports, the man had consumed ayahuasca on five previous occasions. It is unclear what caused him to pass away during this retreat.

The Soul Quest Ayahuasca Church of Mother Earth has had only one complaint to the Better Business Bureau in the last 12 months. But we recommend doing more research before joining or attending this congregation. After hearing the 911 call there did not appear to be a sense of urgency to help the man suffering from a seizure. No charges have been filed, but it appears that he would have had a much better chance of surviving if they had called paramedics immediately. At least that’s what we would have wanted if we were in the victim’s position.
